Smart UV Protection with Home Assistant

Sunscreen only when it matters

UV radiation is increasing year by year, and the WHO continues to warn about the dangers of unprotected sun exposure. But applying sunscreen “just in case” isn’t always ideal — not only because of health debates around certain ingredients, but also because it often isn’t necessary.

What if your home automation could tell you exactly when UV exposure becomes risky?

That’s the idea behind my Home Assistant UV Index integration, which pulls accurate UV index data directly from the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). The goal: context-aware sun protection based on real environmental data — no guesswork, no overprotection.

With just a few lines of YAML, you can automate alerts, reminders, or even trigger sunscreen notifications when critical UV levels are forecasted — all locally, privacy-friendly, and based on reliable public data.

Use cases:

  • Morning dashboard tiles showing today’s UV index
  • Automations sending a push notification when UV > 5

Home Assistant gives us the tools. The DWD gives us the data. Together, they help us and our families stay safe — without overdoing it.
